(Not) wishing for a sunny day

Poem (©2023)

I’m caught in the strange place

between praying for a sunny day

and wishing for the sun to never come again

She needs to have a good last day

I need to have a good last day

with her

I need there to be a beautiful day

so she can sunbathe

chase a bee

See me walk into the yard

run to me with firework whiskers ablaze

greeting me with her joy

I need that

The vet calls

I tell her not today

She understands

and says she'll call tomorrow

She's in pain

But it's not time yet

Please

Please let us have our sunny day

Please don't let the sun come out tomorrow
